The Ndutu area is famed for its short grass plains which grow grass which is particularly rich in nutrients and sustains the migratory animals whilst they have their babies. The Great Migration in Ndutu, occurring between December and March, is a remarkable natural spectacle, renowned for the wildebeest calving season. During this time, the Ndutu plains become a nursery for newborn wildebeests, with as many as 8,000 calves born daily at the peak of the season.
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the Ndutu area, located in the southern Serengeti National Park. The journey takes you through varied landscapes, where you’ll pass traditional Maasai villages and witness the gradual transition from dense forests to the iconic grass plains of the Serengeti. Upon arrival at Heritage Ndutu, you’ll settle into your lodge, which offers a perfect blend of comfort and proximity to nature. Enjoy a delicious dinner under the African skies, where you may hear the distant calls of wildlife, setting the stage for the thrilling safari experiences to come. The evening is a time to relax and prepare for the exciting days ahead.
Wake up early to witness the dawn break over the plains, signaling the start of another thrilling day of safari. After breakfast, embark on a full-day game drive across the vast Ndutu landscape. This area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, and during the Great Migration, the sight of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles grazing and moving across the plains is truly awe-inspiring. Between December and March, you’ll have the chance to see the dramatic calving season, where newborn wildebeests take their first steps, and predators such as lions and cheetahs are often seen stalking their prey. The area’s short grass plains are nutrient-rich, providing sustenance for the herbivores, making it a hotspot for animal activity. Return to Heritage Ndutu for a well-deserved dinner and overnight rest, reflecting on the day’s incredible wildlife encounters.
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll set off once more to explore the Ndutu area. The beauty of the region lies in its ever-changing wildlife scenes, with new surprises around every corner. With a knowledgeable guide by your side, you’ll track wildlife and venture into areas less explored by tourists, enjoying the serenity of the region. As you journey across the plains, you’ll have opportunities to spot big cats like lions, cheetahs, and leopards, as well as various bird species. Your guide will share insights into the behavior and ecology of the animals, enriching your understanding of the ecosystem. The highlight of the day may be a dramatic predator-prey encounter or a breathtaking panoramic view of the plains, alive with herds of animals. After another full day of exploration, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
On your final day, rise early and enjoy a delicious breakfast before departing for the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most famous wildlife destinations in the world. Known as the “Garden of Eden,” the Crater offers the chance to see an incredible concentration of wildlife in a relatively small area. As you descend into the caldera, you’ll witness the stunning landscape, a collapsed volcano that forms a natural amphitheater for a diverse array of animals, including elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and lions. Enjoy a half-day game drive within the Crater, where you may also spot flamingos on the alkaline lakes or herds of wildebeest grazing on the open grasslands. After your adventure, you’ll drive back to Arusha, bringing an unforgettable safari to a close. The journey from the Crater offers one last chance to admire the beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes before your arrival in Arusha, where you can reflect on the magnificent experiences you’ve had over the past few days.
The ideal time to visit Tanzania for a safari is during the dry season, from late June to October. The peak months for witnessing the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti are June and July, while the wildebeest calving period occurs from late January to February. The southern and western circuit parks are best explored during the dry season (June to October), while the more popular northern circuit parks can be visited year-round. However, Tarangire stands out as the only park where wildlife viewing is significantly better during the dry season.
